So, the Avatar trailer is all over the internets…and it’s not generating the type of buzz that Fox was hoping it would. Most of the online communtiy seems to be pretty pleased with it, but the critical community that has wandered over to the online world has deemed it “generic” and “derivative”. I can sort of see their point, but I still think the trailer has a sort of otherworldly vibe that I really respond to. It’s bright, colorful, fast paced, and looks like it could be a lot of fun. Will the film be able to meet all of the unrealistic expectations that have been placed on it? Clearly not. My wording of the previous question provided the answer – the expectation level is unrealistic. It’s James Cameron’s first film since Titanic. Cameron is considered one of the masters of the sci-fi genre with classics such as The Terminator, Terminator 2, and Aliens. The budget is astronomical – costing more than all three of The Lord of the Rings films did, combined. It has no chance of delivering what fans and critics want. It would need to bring an end to hunger, war, poverty, and Brett Ratner films to make everyone happy. And we know that only three of those things are possible as Ratner will survive anything.
I, for one, am excited about it. Will it change my life? No. But I think it’s going to be a pretty awe inspiring film and it will break some new ground in regards to CG effects in a live action film.
